UK Visa Photo Maker — Official Digital Spec, Free

Here is something almost every site gets wrong about UK visa photos: gov.uk does not publish a millimetre size for one.

Search for "UK visa photo size" and you will be told 35 x 45mm, cream or light grey background, maximum 10MB. All three of those come from the UK PASSPORT photo page. The visa guidance is a separate document with a separate spec, and it is digital: your photo must be at least 600 x 750 pixels, between 50KB and 6MB, in jpg or jpeg, on a plain light-coloured background. No print size, and a 6MB ceiling rather than 10MB.

That distinction is the whole reason this page exists. If you are applying online — which is how most UK visa applications now work — you are uploading a file, not gluing a print into a booklet, so a pixel count and a file size are the only numbers that matter.

This tool outputs 1200 x 1500 pixels, which is double the stated minimum in each dimension and comfortably inside the 6MB cap. gov.uk sets a floor, not a ceiling, so bigger is fine and gives you a sharper photo than scraping the minimum.

One thing this page cannot help with: if your application routes you through a VFS or TLScontact visa centre, your photo and biometrics are captured there in person, and none of this applies. Everything here runs in your browser; your photo is never uploaded. Check the current gov.uk guidance before you submit.

FAQ

Common questions

In pixels: at least 600 x 750, between 50KB and 6MB, in jpg or jpeg, on a plain light-coloured background. gov.uk's visa guidance states no millimetre size at all — if a site tells you 35 x 45mm for a UK visa, it is quoting the UK passport spec.

No. The passport spec is a print size (45mm high x 35mm wide, crown to chin 29-34mm) with a cream or light grey background and a 10MB digital ceiling. The visa spec is digital-only, allows a plain light-coloured background, and caps at 6MB. Same country, different documents, different rules.

Because gov.uk specifies a minimum of 600 x 750, not an exact size. 1200 x 1500 is the same 4:5 shape at double the minimum, which satisfies the requirement with margin and gives a sharper result than sitting exactly on the floor. It stays well inside the 6MB cap.

Then your photo is taken there. The gov.uk digital spec covers photos you upload yourself as part of an online application. If your route involves a VFS or TLScontact appointment, biometrics and the photo are captured in person and you do not need to prepare one.

No. The crop, resize and compression all run in your browser using the Canvas API — your photo never leaves your device.
