What Is sRGB? Why Photos Look Duller
The reason a punchy photo sometimes turns dull the moment you post it online — a mismatch between the colours your file uses and the ones the web expects.
sRGB is the standard colour space of the web — the default range of colours that browsers, phones, and most screens assume an image is using. When your file actually uses a wider range and the thing displaying it assumes plain sRGB, the extra saturation has nowhere to go, and vivid colours come out flat and washed-out. What a colour space even is
A pixel's colour is stored as numbers. A colour space is the agreement about what those numbers mean — how red the reddest red is, how green the greenest green. sRGB is a modest, universally understood range designed decades ago as a safe common denominator. Converting down to sRGB deliberately means you decide how the vivid colours are mapped into the smaller range, instead of leaving a stranger's browser to guess. It'll be a touch less saturated than the wide-gamut master — but it will look the same everywhere, which is the whole point.
