How to Make a Photo Background White
Remove the background, click White, download. Which route to take depends on what you start with, and one of them needs no AI at all.
To make a photo background white, open Remove Background, drop in the photo, click Remove Background, then choose White before you download. The tool cuts the subject out and fills everything behind it with solid white, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
The default result is transparent, not white. The White button is a separate click on the result screen, so downloading straight away gives you a transparent PNG.
How to make the background white, step by step
- Open Remove Background and add a JPG, PNG, or WebP up to 25MB. It takes one image at a time.
- Click Remove Background. The first run downloads the AI model once (about 5MB); later runs skip that wait.
- The cutout appears on a grey checkerboard, which is how transparency is shown. Under it are four background choices: Transparent, White, Black, and a Custom colour picker. Click White.
- Click Download PNG. The file is saved as
yourname-no-bg.pngwith a pure white background (hex #ffffff).
The picture keeps its pixel dimensions. In our test run an 800 x 600 photo came back as an 800 x 600 PNG, with the corner pixel reading 255, 255, 255.
Which route fits the file you have?
The four steps above cover a normal photo. Two other starting points are common, and one of them is faster.
You already have a transparent PNG
A logo, a sticker, or a cutout you made earlier has no background left to remove, so skip the AI step. PNG to JPG fills every transparent pixel with white as it converts, because JPG cannot store transparency. It accepts several PNGs at once, which Remove Background does not. If transparency is new to you, that guide explains what is being filled.
The form or site only takes JPG
Remove Background always saves a PNG, including after you click White. Run that PNG through PNG to JPG and the picture looks the same, since the background is already white. The JPG is usually much smaller too: our 46KB white-background test PNG came out as an 8.7KB JPG at the default quality. A flat test image flatters that number, so expect a smaller gap on a detailed photo.
Still over an upload limit after converting? Compress Image has an optional target size field in MB.
What a white fill can't fix
The tool replaces the background. It does not brighten the one you have. That matters in three cases.
- A dingy white wall. You are not whitening the wall; the model decides which pixels are you and paints white over the rest. A subject wearing white against a white wall gives it little to separate, and parts of the clothing can go with the wall.
- Hair and soft edges. The model is a small one (u2netp) picked so it can run on your device. Loose strands and fur come out rough, and against pure white a leftover fringe of the old background colour is easy to see. A plain backdrop that contrasts with your hair helps more than anything done afterwards.
- Touch-ups. There is no brush or eraser. If the cutout takes a bite out of a shoulder, the fix is a better source photo.
Edge quality in general is covered in how to remove an image background. Selling online? The marketplace rules for white are in how to remove a product photo background.
Should you do this to a passport photo?
Usually not. The U.S. Department of State tells applicants not to alter a passport photo with software, apps, or filters, and a replaced background is an alteration. Other countries word their rules differently, and white is not even the required colour everywhere: passport photo background colour rules quotes four authorities. Take the photo against a real plain wall, then size it with the Passport Photo Maker for your country.
For a CV headshot, a staff directory, or a profile picture, there is usually no rule like that and a digital white background is fine. For a student or staff ID card, check whether the issuer publishes photo rules first.
FAQ
Why is my background a grey checkerboard?
That is the transparent result. Click White under the preview and the checkerboard is replaced before you download.
Can I use off-white or light grey instead?
Yes. The Custom colour picker next to White and Black takes any colour, and the download uses whatever is showing in the preview.
Why is the white-background file bigger than my original?
The download is a PNG, and PNG is often larger than the JPG a phone or camera saved. Convert it with PNG to JPG to bring it back down.
Can I do a batch of photos?
Not through Remove Background, which takes one image per run. Transparent PNGs you already have can go through PNG to JPG together.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model and its runtime are downloaded to your browser once, and the photo is processed on your device.
